My journey into the world of weaving

Finishing the scarves

I have fringed and washed the scarves. They are drying right now. Then I’ll trim some of the ends off, give them a quick iron, shake ’em out, and they will be ready to give.

I was going to give one of them to my father. I thought of him a lot as I wove. He died on December 7th. So now this scarf is woven into my grief and I need to think of how I can still give this scarf to him.

I also need to return to my weaving and my spinning. That is my refuge. I have nothing on my loom right now but I have been very inspired by Peg in South Carolina about using my handspun not only as weft but warp.

So let me get through these next few weeks and then I’ll begin this next project. In the meantime, I can spin too.

  1. Susan, I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your father. Since a particular scarf was woven for your father and you certainly had him on your mind during weaving, I think you should consider keeping this scarf for yourself. There really is a lot of meaning and feeling woven into this piece, daughter to father. Yes, it has taken on a different meaning, but the fact remains this was to be his scarf and you are an extension of him. It will provide you very special comfort upon wearing.

  2. Hi Margaret,
I like that idea and I totally hadn’t thought of it.
    Thank you!

  3. But I ended up giving one to my brother and one to my husband who believe it or not has never received anything woven from me until now!
