My journey into the world of weaving

More on new project

This is a project to use up some of my stash. The warp is bamboo (left over from the baby blanket) and the weft will be alpaca and camel mixes! I’m taking on a plain weave. This was challenge enough!

I have threaded the heddles…it took a moment of consideration. I am so rusty! But it’s becoming smoother and smoother. Next is sleying the reed. I’ll update. This feels good!

New project – placemats

I am preparing the warp of the new project – placemats. I am using 3/2 unmercerized cotton for the warp and the same plus some 3/2 mercerized cotton for the weft. The pattern comes from Handwoven, November-December 2009.

Before I can start that on the loom, I have to get the handspun scarves off. I have finished one and am half way done with the second. The weft of the second scarf is gray alpaca. I had toyed with the idea of mixing in some other yarn but I like the overall muted look of the gray. It looks cozy!

I’ll get some weaving done this morning but then I am off to cross-country ski with my niece!

Still weaving

I’m on vacation this week. Part One was spent in Florida; Part Two at home weaving and other fiber activities.

I have woven 30 inches plus now on the doubleweave blanket. I felt a bit rusty for a couple of picks but I am back in the rhythm. I really hope to finish this blanket this week! And of course, I will need a new project. In between weaving picks, I’ll be thinking on that.

I will also be spinning. I am plying the gray alpaca cria with some white wool fiber. When I finish that, all of the gray will have been spun. That may be my next project.

I also need to weave up some bookmarks, having given the last away.

And I need to research a bit of weaving I purchased in Florida. The tag is in Croatian and says it is from the former Yugoslavia. So more on that later.

Good to be home and good to have time to attend to my loom and wheel!
