My journey into the world of weaving

Placemats are completed!

Today, I hemmed and ironed the placemats. Also snipped little loose ends off.

I have almost a matching set of 7! They are all about 18 inches in length and 12.75 inches in width.

There is one placemat which is 14.5 in length. That can be a mini table runner!

This is the last set for the year I am fairly certain. And definitely with this fiber although I had no problem with the dark color so I could do something with that for a warp. But the lint!

Next project needs to be threaded and sleyed. I think it will be a set of wall hangings!

On a side note, I was at a gathering of folks yesterday in celebration of my father’s 90th. I had planned to bring my rental spinning wheel to return to Melodi who was going to be at the party. We brought out the wheel and some fiber. Both my sister and I spun a little. What I was amazed about was that once I got spinning, I totally tuned out the crowd! I wasn’t nervous but just really into sharing this experience. And people were interested! One little boy said he wanted to spin! cool, very cool.

Placemats – 5 done

I have completed 5 of the 8 placemats. This one went pretty smoothly; maybe began with a couple of broken ends but the rest went well.

I have planned my next project and actually have warped it. It is going to be a “wall hanging” if all goes well for my office which badly needs color and things on the wall. The pattern is warp rep, from a Handwoven, Jan/Feb, 2006.

Already I have strayed from the color order and I suspect that will impact the pattern. But I didn’t have the colors suggested in the magazine and I wasn’t sure I had enough so I improvised some of the color order as I warped.

So it will be an “artistic” wall hanging! I don’t have much at stake here, only 3 yards. I just want to weave a lot of colors and that’s what I am going to do!

I will still follow the tie up and treadling for warp rep and see what that gives me.

I still have to finish the placemats!

Rug is done!

Off the loom, stray ends cut, and fringed! And lying in place.

I pondered the fringing for a while, trying several different approaches and ended with this.

The fringe is about 3 inches long.

I am pleased with the rug! It is 79 inches in length – perfect! I’m glad it’s not longer. It is 26 inches in width.

I gave my loom some TLC this afternoon: dusting, tightening, soothing words. It is ready for the next project which will be scarves using my handspun for the weft! Pattern to be decided as I wind the warp into balls and then warping.

Whew. I will not be doing another rug on this loom. I will try to do some more weaving with rags but on smaller projects. That was fun!
